Fontana Mazda Shoppers Compare The
2020 Mazda CX-30 vs 2020 Hyundai Kona

The all-new 2020 Mazda CX-30 is a subcompact SUV that pleases customers at the Mazda dealer near Fontana, thanks to its long list of standard equipment, head-turning looks and ample cargo space. The CX-30 is larger than the subcompact CX-3 and smaller than the compact CX-5. CX-30 owners also like the high level of luxury afforded by the CX-30, which makes it look and feel like a much more expensive vehicle.

Some buyers looking for a subcompact SUV may also be considering the 2020 Hyundai Kona. We’ll examine the two models side by side and see which one emerges as the best buy.

Compare Performance

According to the folks at the Fontana area Mazda dealership, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 is powered by the same powerplant found under the hood of the 2020 Mazda3: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Hyundai Kona’s base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that only makes 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque.

Compare Handling

Both vehicles handle well. However, the Mazda CX-30’s standard G-Vectoring Control Plus takes driving dynamics to the next level. When cornering, G-Vectoring Control Plus enhances stability by applying light braking force to the outer wheels and shifts the vehicle’s weight forward to increase traction.

The CX-30 has a wheelbase that’s 2.1-inches longer than the Kona, which helps to deliver more stable handling and a smoother ride.

Off-Road Capability
The Mazda CX-30’s optional advanced AWD system gives it an advantage over the Hyundai Kona. Off-Road Traction Assist lets you negotiate rugged off-road trails with ease. When driving on slippery terrain, this system monitors traction and sends the right amount of torque to the wheels, reducing tire spin to prevent you from getting stuck.

The CX-30 has 6.9-inches of ground clearance, providing greater off-road capability than the Kona, which only has 6.7 inches of clearance. The CX-30 can drive over rough ground without having to stop or experience damage.

Cargo Capacity
Drivers looking to transport and store cargo should choose the CX-30 over the Kona. The CX-30 gets 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, compared with 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space for the Kona.

Safety
The 2020 Mazda CX-30 features standard whiplash-reducing headrests, which protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash in the event of an accident. If there’s a rear-end collision, the headrests move forward to prevent spine and neck injuries. The 2020 Hyundai Kona doesn’t have a similar system.

Both vehicles received five-star overall safety ratings from the NHTSA. But the Mazda CX-30 gets standard adaptive cruise control, while Hyundai only offers adaptive cruise control on the Kona’s top-of-the-line trim. And the CX-30 gets available LED headlights that turn to provide better visibility around corners, another feature you can’t get in the CX-30.

In the End
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is a good car, but it’s easy to see that it’s outclassed by the 2020 Mazda CX-30, which has a more powerful standard engine, better handling, more cargo space and exclusive safety features.
